I am intrigued by the radiant colors and intricate shapes found in the natural world, many
of which look artificial to the human eye. I am attracted to logically derived systems and
patterns found repeatedly in nature, and man’s attempt to imitate them. The ideas of
microcosm and macrocosm are at the core of my work.
From quantum to cosmic, the physical world is comprised of the coexistence of contrasting
elements. I compose my paintings this way, exploiting the interaction of diverse paint mixtures
and application techniques. The paint, concocted of pigment-water dispersions and various
combinations of acrylic and urethane binders, create surfaces easily mistaken as other materials.
My painting techniques include pouring contrasting mixtures of paint and allowing them to
naturally react, meticulously painting a pattern from tiny dots, or applying clear or transparent
layers to emphasize the illusion of space--by creating it physically.
Like a still frame of film, my compositions capture moments in a potential time with few elements,
but each rich in detail. Influenced by Eastern miniature painting as well as micro and macro
photography and cinematography, my work reveals an infatuation with the minutia of visual life,
objects and nature. Both conceptually and technically my paintings encapsulate the depth of many
layers, reflecting the immensity of the universe. My goal is to create paintings which, regardless of
their size, will capture someone at a distance and engage the viewer in a manner in which their eyes
will scan from across the room to within an inch of the painting’s surface—discovering its detail visible
only from as close as their eyes can focus.
